Former Cyclone guard returns to play at Hilton, this time as a Hawkeye

The always raucous rivalry between Iowa State and Iowa will take another step up with the return of former Cyclone men's basketball player Adam Haluska to the court he called home for one season.

The guard played for the Cyclones as a freshman in 2002-03, averaging 9.2 points per game for a team that reached the NIT.

But after the season, amid the turmoil and scandal surrounding the accusations that coach Larry Eustachy had partied with students at the University of Missouri, Haluska transferred to in-state rival Iowa.

Haluska was forced to sit out a season because of the transfer, missing a chance to play two seasons ago when Iowa came to Hilton Coliseum.

Now he's back.

Cyclone senior guard John Neal is the only current ISU player who played with Haluska, and the two remain friends. The two still talk once every week or two.

"I don't know if he's to excited to come back," Neal said. "I'm sure it's going to be a tough place to play."

Stinson faces old friend at Fresno State showdown

When the ISU men's basketball team takes the floor against Fresno State on Saturday night, a familiar face will suit up against them.

Fresno State guard Donovan Morris was the teammate and roommate of ISU junior guard Curtis Stinson in prep school, and the game will mark their first action against each other.

"He'll be in town tonight, and I talked to him last night," Stinson said. "They played Buffalo and I talked to him about the game. I talk to him all the time.

Houston Bowl officials expect crowd of 50,000 if ISU is picked

Houston Bowl officials expect one of the largest crowds in the five-year history of the game if Iowa State is chosen on Sunday to face Texas Christian University in the Dec. 31 game.

"I'm already hearing from Iowa State fans who are asking about how to get tickets and about various events associated with the game," said Aaron Osborn, ticket manager for the 1:30 p.m. Houston Bowl that will be televised by ESPN2. "From that kind of response, and from what I hear about early ticket projections, we could be looking at a pretty huge crowd. Right now, I'm anticipating around 50,000. That would be great."

I-S-U shuts down cold shooting U-N-I

U-N-I's shooting woes proved costly last night in Ames. Averaging just 24-percent from three point range going into the game the Panthers made only six of 22 from behind the arc and Iowa State took advantage in a 68-61 victory. The Cyclones took the lead for good with a 12-0 run midway through the opening half.

Pollard swipes Malchow from Badger Athletic Dept.

Former UW deputy athletics director and current Iowa State athletic director Jaime Pollard announced that Steve Malchow, a senior-level athletics administrator with the Badgers since 1990, has accepted a position to join the Cyclones athletics department staff.

“This is a great day for Iowa State athletics,” Pollard said. “Bringing Steve Malchow to ISU was one of my first priorities. To get him here from Wisconsin is a real coup for our program.”
